Type: Reading
The term "reading" refers to a public event at which poetry, fiction, or critical work is read aloud to an audience, or at which a lecture or speech is delivered. Ashbery will most often be the person delivering a reading, although occasionally Ashbery will be the subject of a reading/lecture by another person. Readings may be documented by audio or video recordings of the event or by posters, programs, newspaper announcements, press releases, etc.
Readings will not be cited in this catalogue unless the documentation of the reading qualifies the material in some other way for inclusion: for example, if the program for the reading includes a poem by Ashbery; if a journal review of a reading includes critical discussion of Ashbery; if another poet reading at the same event has included his/her poem influenced by Ashbery's work; if the reading is recorded on audio or video; etc. Otherwise, no attempt has been made in this catalogue to document the hundreds of readings that Ashbery has given worldwide during the course of his career. Users interested in that type of information may contact the ARC to determine what may be available.
