Format: Art publication
Art publications include both periodicals (such as ARTnews, Modern Painters, Art International and ARTFORUM) and monographs (such as exhibition catalogues or fine art editions) devoted to the visual arts.
For the purposes of this catalogue, Architectural Digest and House & Garden will be considered art publications. However, although Ashbery has written little other than art criticism for the International Herald-Tribune newspaper and for New York and Newsweek magazines, these cannot be reasonably considered art publications because their general focus is not on the visual arts. Nor do biographies of artists or artists' memoirs necessarily constitute art publications, because they often give precedence to the events of a life over critical consideration of a body of work.
Whether or not an item is considered an art publication is determined by the focus of the publication itself, rather than the type or subject of the relevant text it contains. For example, art books and exhibition catalogues including poems by Ashbery, but not writing about art, are art publications.
Some art publications may be double-classified as books (fine art editions or artists' biographies, for example) or periodicals. Exhibition catalogues are usually not double-classified.
