Bibliographic code: Section M
|
Section M includes an eclectic, non-comprehensive and admittedly arbitrary collection of anthologies that contain work by or translated by Ashbery that has been previously published in book form. (Anthologies that constitute the first publication of work by or translated by Ashbery will be found in Sections B or E. First book publication is exclusive to each country of publication. Translations of Ashbery's work that are published bilingually [i.e., in which the original work in English is published simply to accompany the translated text] are found in Section G.)
Usually, only the first publication of Ashbery's work in a particular anthology is given a separate citation. Updated, expanded and/or revised editions may be mentioned in the notes field of the citation for the original or earliest available publication of that anthology.
Anthologies, which are aimed at diverse audiences and intended to serve various purposes, are organized around many different sets of criteria: those used as textbooks in academic settings tend to include "representative" works, while others focus on specific literary forms or genres, themes, occasions, etc. In a traditional bibliographic sense, most anthologies that reprint work from other books are of limited interest. However, the ARC includes a group of anthologies in its collection because of its strong interest in the context in which a writer's work appears and the broad significance of that context. By examining a group of anthologies that have been published over an extended period of time, it is possible to gain insight into the trajectory of a literary reputation. Analysis of the various contexts within which a writer's work is anthologized reveals much about the life of individual texts following their initial publication, shedding light on evolving critical and popular perceptions of an author's work, as well as changing attitudes towards literature/poetry in the popular culture.
Reprinted work accompanied by extensive footnotes or short critical essays is in Section L1; reprinted work accompanied by questions and/or exercises for students is in Section L4.
