Section J1 includes miscellaneous writings and published remarks by Ashbery.
These may include a passing remark made by Ashbery that was published in a newspaper column; or Ashbery's brief statement or short letter to the editor on a subject such as gardening, cooking, or the geography of New York City. Section J1 also includes Ashbery's choices for such informal "contests" as "Book of the Year," "Current Bedtime Reading," or "Best Poem of the 20 th Century."
For Ashbery's formal prose in books and periodicals, including longer letters to the editor on subjects such as Hudson Valley environmentalism, see Sections B and C; for his more formal roles as editor or as judge of a competition, see Section D.
Usually, only the first publication of Section J1 items, whether in books or periodicals, is given a complete citation. All known reprints usually are mentioned in the notes field of the citation.
