The instruction manual: |
Bibliographic code: Section G
|
Section G includes translations of Ashbery's work (poetry, prose, writing about art, interviews, etc.). It includes both first publications and reprints of material from books and periodicals.
Complete citations are given for all items in Section G, regardless of whether they are first publications or reprints, because the diversity of languages represented in this section frequently makes it difficult to distinguish among formats, editions, printings, and variations in the translations themselves.
Section G items often include at least a short biographical note on Ashbery, and sometimes a longer critical essay, introduction or afterword. Such material, while noted in the Section G citation, is not categorized separately in Section L1 unless it is particularly noteworthy or substantial.
Section G only includes material that has already been published in English. Therefore, an interview with Ashbery, published only in Spanish, would be categorized in Section H rather than Section G, despite the fact that it certainly was conducted in English and later translated.
Users should be aware that while the ARC has attempted to accurately document as much information as possible about foreign-language items, interpretation of these publications is sometimes difficult. Users should verify information included in these citations.
Caution:
You may not be able to search for a term that contains accent marks without using accent marks in your search. Searching without accent marks for text with accent marks should work for the major European languages: French, Spanish, Italian, German. For some phrases in Polish, Romanian, Hungarian, etc., you must search for the exact term, including foreign characters and accent marks, in order to obtain results. Because the number of results for those languages is relatively small, we suggest that you search by Type: translation, and the particular language, rather than by title or publication. Non-Latin alphabets for languages such as Greek, Russian, Japanese, or Sanskrit are not usually used in the catalogue — Latin-character transliterations of words in those languages have been given when possible.
