Bibliographic code: Section D |
Section D includes books, periodicals and series edited by or with works selected by Ashbery, as well as materials relating to situations in which Ashbery served in an official capacity as judge, juror, or nominator in a competition.
Ashbery's choices in more informal contexts (for example, as a contributor to a "Book of the Year" or "Best Poem of the 20 th Century" feature) are included in Section J1.
A volume edited by Ashbery or a publication including the poems of a contest winner chosen by Ashbery will often include a statement by Ashbery. This statement is usually considered part of the Section D entry rather than a separate Section B or Section C item unless that statement constitutes a formal introduction to a publication (for example, Ashbery's introduction to Muck Arbour, 1975, published by the J. Philip O'Hara Poetry Series, edited by Ashbery; or Ashbery's introduction to The Best American Poetry, 1988, guest-edited by Ashbery).
Examples of Section D material
Avant-Garde Art, 1968 (monographic series published as ARTnews Annuals, edited by Ashbery and Thomas B. Hess)
Poetry Pilot, 1970-09-00 (newsletter of the Academy of American Poets, including poems by various authors chosen by Ashbery, along with his statement about the selection)
New York Quarterly, 1975 (journal including the announcement of Ashbery's choice of Charles Bukowski's "The Avoidance of Boredom" for the Madeline Sadin Award)
Partisan Review, 1976 (journal for which Ashbery served as the poetry editor)
Pushcart Prize II, 1977 (annual anthology including poems by Douglas Crase and James Schuyler, both nominated for inclusion by Ashbery)
